RFP Advice From The Front Lines – Cognition: The blog of web design & development firm Happy Cog

Early 2015 found me writing up a digital marketing plan for my organization and working to get internal funding for a new public marketing site. Yes, even SaaS-based companies that build websites need to know when to outsource like we do with basic websites. I found this link relevant for anyone in those shoes as a way to get you focused on the key drivers for your project.

A key risk when outsourcing is to outsource the goals, considerations, and approach you want for a project. Externals certainly have expertise that you are paying to bring into your organization but if you don’t guide and lead them you’ll end up not knowing when you’re satisfied and they’ll be unclear on what to serve you. I’ve been on both sides of that and it’s messy.

In this case I personally want to rebrand/relaunch our site so it’s updated and modern with a responsive design that hums on mobile. I’d like the site to be simpler and to move away from the content creator phase we dabbled with as that doesn’t resonate with our b2b market. Finally, I want our site to be an ally when recruiting talent, especially technical talent. Our current site wouldn’t allow a recruit to check the box that our company ‘gets’ UX, layout, or trends.

Now I just need the funding.
